On my way to work. This fence has generously given photo opportunities over the years. Since I took this image, a long part of that rusty, painted, ivy-covered mesh has been replaced with silvery, plain, straight metal grid. Gone is the ivy.

Donauinsel is an artificial, long-stretching island, that divides river Danube all along its way through Vienna. One half, New Danube is always kept lower than the other, and in times of high water, it works as perfect protection for the city.

The image has been taken from the island, across New Danube.

This is at the entrance of Blumengärten Hirschstätten, the flower gardens of our municipal garden department. Somehow the symmetry didn’t work in color. It worked better in black and white.

Everything comes to an end. Some things sooner, some later. Once this place lay at the bottom of a warm, shallow sea, a few times it was covered by mountains of ice. Life is short.

Still, I worry about democracy. The problem is this:

We try to make it very hard to convict someone for his crimes. It’s for a reason. Very often you don’t know for sure, and in doubt, you let someone very likely guilty get away. You can’t prove beyond reasonable doubt. And still, from to time someone innocent ends up in jail. No judgement is perfect, but we try. That’s also the reason why civilized countries have given up on the death penalty. You can free someone from jail, but you cannot revive him.

Still images of 2020. Last week we returned from a four-day trip to Český Krumlov, one of Europe’s most beautiful towns, conveniently reachable from Vienna in just two hours by car. I returned with about 1000 RAW files. Sure, there are a few multi-shots for panorama or HDR, but I expect something around 200 final images worth processing. It will take them a long time to appear on this blog.
