4222 - Outside of the Wall


Of course, like any old city, Nuremberg has long outgrown its walls. Actually there are not many instances of major cities that shrank considerably within their walls. The most prominent was Constantinolpe. When it fell, much of the area within its massive fortifications had become agriculturally used - which may be another reason why it could hang on for so long: It could grow plenty of food within the walls 🙂
