Such strong compression of dynamic range is dangerous if not handled with care. A common HDR technique is to break up the homogeneity of flat areas. They are darkened in the middle, and where they border darker areas, they get lightened up. This is the dreaded halo effect that you so often see in smartphone images. I try to avoid it at all costs.
